Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that Miley Cyrus is only 22-years-old. She became a teen idol when she was really young thanks to her starring role on the hit teen sitcom, “Hannah Montana.” It feels as though she was forced to mature when she was really young, which might help explain why she’s gone so out of control as a young adult. Watching her red carpet fashion, you can see the precise moments when she wanted to be taken seriously and when she decided to completely let go. Compared to most stars, Cyrus’ fashion evolution has taken more twists and turns and you can see it with your own eyes right here!

VH1 Big in ‘06 Awards – 2006

Miley Cyrus was trying really hard to look all kinds of cute at the VH1 Big in ’06 Awards. She rocked this glittery top with a pair of black slacks and matching shoes. We think the outfit is tasteful. The one thing that really stands out though is her hungry little smile. At the age of 11, she was already starving for attention and this picture shows it. She’s had her first taste of fame and she wants more – much, much more.

2006 is really when Cyrus’ career began. She landed the lead role in “Hannah Montana.” She reportedly auditioned for the role of the best friend, but was asked to audition for the lead. At first, she was told she was too young and too small for the part, but she persisted and the next year she landed it. The show was an instant success and helped propel Cyrus to superstardom.

Teen Choice Awards – 2007

The “Hannah Montana” star loved all of the attention she received at the 2007 Teen Choice Awards. She wore this light blue sequined tank dress with sparkly embellishments. We aren’t huge fans of this look. The dress isn’t appropriate for someone as young as she was and it isn’t even that great a fit on her anyway. She needs to dress her age. There will be plenty of time when she is older for her to show skin.

Miley Cyrus wasn’t just a television star in 2007. She had signed a four-album deal with Hollywood Records and embarked on a 54-date concert tour, which sold out in minutes. This same year, she started dating Nick Jonas, the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers. They went on to date for two years, but broke up in 2008. “Nick and I loved each other,” she later told Seventeen. “For two years he was basically my 24/7.”

American Music Awards – 2008

Despite being only 16-years-old, Miley Cyrus looked all grown up at the American Music Awards. She donned this gold embellished strapless Marchesa Spring 2009 mini-dress and completed the look with black Giuseppe Zanotti pumps. We think she looks really pretty; however, this is yet another dress that isn’t age appropriate.

In 2008, Cyrus was beginning to experience some difficulty being a role model to young girls. A photo of her exposing her bra for the camera was leaked online and another photo of her lifting up her shirt, as she lay sprawled across a guy on a couch was also leaked. She also posed semi-clothed for Vanity Fair, which drew a lot of criticism. “For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie [Leibovitz]. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” Cyrus told People.

51^st Annual Grammy Awards – 2009

The actress-singer was one of the best dressed stars at the 51^st Annual Grammy Awards. She donned this one-shouldered, asymmetrical Herve Leger by Max Azria Fall 2008 gown, accessorizing with a Max Azira Atelier bag, BCBG heels and jewels from Mimi So and Atelier Swarovski. This is easily one of her best red carpet moments yet. It is mature, but stylish at the same time.

2009 was a pretty good year for Miley Cyrus professionally and romantically. She starred in “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” which topped the box office, and she reconnected with her old flame Nick Jonas; however, it was short-lived. Not long after these two broke up, she was spotted looking pretty cozy with her co-star from “The Last Song,” Liam Hemsworth. These two were spotted kissing in Nashville in August 2009. They begin a pretty intense on-again, off-again relationship that led to a brief engagement and then a devastating breakup.

82^nd Annual Academy Awards – 2010

Miley Cyrus looked lovely at the 82^nd Annual Academy Awards in this champagne-colored strapless gown by Jenny Packham, which featured beading and sequins, as well as a bustier bodice. While we do think she looks nice, we can’t help but feel that the dress is a little too mature for her. She’s still a teenager and she has her whole life to wear these kinds of dresses. She should have just enjoyed her youth.

In 2010, Cyrus experienced some personal setbacks. She and Liam Hemsworth parted ways after months of breakup rumors and her parents announced that they were planning to divorce after 17-years of marriage. A photo of the young role model smoking from a bong was also leaked. At the time, she claimed she was smoking the natural herb salvia; however, looking at how open she now is about smoking pot, it is pretty safe to assume that she was smoking that.

Kids Choice Awards – 2011

“The Last Song” star looked pretty ladylike at the 2011 Kids Choice Awards in this floor-length, flowered Dolce & Gabbana gown. She completed the look with an envelope clutch, layered necklaces and a hammered turquoise bangle. We think this is yet another great look on Miley Cyrus. Compared to most of her other red carpet outfits, this one is more age appropriate. If she dressed like this when she was a bit younger, people wouldn’t have been so critical.

In 2011, she took a break from her music career to focusing on acting. She had a starring role in “So Undercover,” a film that received mostly negative reviews from critics. The Daily Mail called it the “last nail in the coffin,” of Cyrus’ acting career. The Guardian was a little kinder, but didn’t flatter her or her acting abilities. “Cyrus seems bored, as if ready to jump ship to another movie.”

MTV Video Music Awards – 2012

Miley Cyrus seemed to be trying to a vampy look at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. She rocked this cleavage-baring Emilio Pucci Fall 2012 gown, which featured sheer panels, with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and an Edie Parker clutch. We really don’t like how she styled her hair and the dress is another problem altogether. It looks like it was stolen from Morticia Addams’ closet. When it comes to fashion, she always takes one step forward and then one step back

Cyrus was still focusing on her acting career in 2012; however, we don’t think it was going especially well. She had a starring role in the film “LOL” alongside Demi Moore; however, it was not critically or commercially successful. She also appeared on the sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” as Jake’s girlfriend Missi. She got to strut around in a bikini and flirt with Ashton Kutcher. Some women would probably have killed for this opportunity!

Premiere of Paranoia – 2013

The attention-hungry star looked like a tightly wound ball of energy at the premiere of “Paranoia.” She was there supporting her fiancé-at-the-time Liam Hemsworth and it seemed pretty apparent that she didn’t particularly enjoy playing a supporting role. At least she looked nice! She wore this sleeveless red-black-and-snakeskin patchwork perforated leather Proenza Schouler Spring 2013 dress with white Saint Laurent pumps and a white Chanel shoulder bag. Personally, we would have gone with black accessories instead of white, but that’s just us.

Not long after this event, Miley Cyrus took the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards by storm with her raunchy performance with Robin Thicke. She was able to turn many heads, but not for the right reasons. A few weeks later, following months of speculation, she and Hemsworth called it quits on their relationship. Cyrus spent the next year ensuring her name was in the headlines with her attention-grabbing antics.

MTV Video Music Awards – 2014

Miley Cyrus was slightly more subdued at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. She wore this black leather two-piece ensemble from the Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2014 Couture collection. We personally wouldn’t like this sort of ensembles on many other celebrities but, on Cyrus, it seems to work. She is in a stage now where she just loves to show skin and shock people. This is a slightly classier way for her to shock us. At least it doesn’t involve twerking!

Cyrus again managed to make the VMAs all about her. She had a young homeless man – who she brought as her date – take the stage to accept her award for Video of the Year on her behalf. As he gave an impassioned speech about runaways and homeless youth in Los Angeles, she sat there with tears in her eyes. Cyrus is an expert when it comes to self-promotion. She managed to make everything about her without even opening her mouth!
