He’s lucky he’s charming!
Actor Charlie Hunnam, best known for his role on Sons of Anarchy recently revealed that he ended up having to apologize to his longtime girlfriend Morgan McNelis in a big way after he ignored for several months while he was filming his upcoming movie The Lost City of Z.
Hunnam explained he had no intention of ghosting his girlfriend, but his filming location in Colombia made it difficult to maintain contact. “We went to Colombia, and the mail system doesn’t really work very well,” Hunnam told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s completely unreliable. I received a letter from her, and I realized from the tone of it and things she was saying that she hadn’t received the two letters that I sent before.”
At first Hunnam’s plan was to write McNelis a letter every day, but once he realized the mail system was not on his side he made the decision that the lack of communication and strain on his relationship would actually help him with his character “which obviously makes me sound like a total bastard, appropriately so,” Hunnam added.
In the film Hunnam portrays 19th-century explorer Percy Fawcett whose obsession with finding a lost city greatly impacts his family life. “One of the things that [director James Gray] and I felt strongly that we wanted to explore in the film was the conflict between family life and the exterior demands that are made on us and the social and economic demands that we all need to deal with in life, being balanced or in conflict with the internal drive, to be the people we want to be and achieve the things that we want to achieve,” he explained.
Luckily once Hunnam was able to contact McNelis again she hadn’t completely given up on him yet and of course it took some hefty apologizing from the handsome star. “I had the benefit of shooting in Colombia, where they have rather lovely and somewhat cheap emeralds,” Hunnam said. “My girlfriend is a jewelry designer, so I was able to come back with an appropriately sized gift. It didn’t remedy all of the trouble I was in, but it got me halfway there.”
