Following the news of the Queen’s passing, Prince William and Kate Middleton have adopted new titles.

Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday that the Queen had passed. She was 96 and passed at Balmoral Castle in Scotland surrounded by family.

Shortly after she passed, the official @KensingtonRoyal Twitter and Instagram accounts were updated as belonging to the “Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.” The Duke of Cornwall title is traditionally given to the eldest son of the reigning British monarch, with his wife taking the Duchess title.

Prince William and Kate have been known by the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for over ten years. The titles were bestowed upon them by the Queen on their wedding day in April 2011.

Prince William and Kate are also expected to inherit the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales. King Charles III held the title of Prince of Wales until the Queen’s passing on Thursday. He also previously held the titles the Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Duke of Rothesay, which was used in Scotland.

The title of Prince of Wales is traditionally given to a male heir apparent. This title will not be immediately passed to William following his grandmother’s passing. It must be given to him by the sovereign. Princess Diana previously held the title of Princess of Wales after she wed Charles in 1981.
