Tori Spelling Criticizes Oscars’ Exclusion Of ‘90210’ Alum Luke Perry From In Memoriam Tribute

Tori Spelling is speaking out about Luke Perry being left out of the in memoriam tribute during the live telecast of the Oscars on Sunday, February 9.

The 46-year-old actress said her former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar’s exclusion reminded her of the time when her father, Aaron Spelling, was also excluded from the segment in 2007.

“Now two of the most creative and talented men I have ever known, loved, and lost have not been mentioned in the #oscars memoriam,” Spelling tweeted. “First, my Dad Aaron Spelling who passed in 2006 and now my friend Luke Perry who passed in 2019.”

The annual in memoriam segment honors Hollywood stars who’ve passed away in the past year. Perry’s exclusion is noticeable since he starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, which was nominated for Best Picture.

Dean McDermott, Spelling’s husband, also shared his disappointment on Instagram, pointing out other actors whose names were not included in the segment.

“Also missing from the in Memoriam is Sid Haig, Tim Conway, Michael J Pollard, Jan Michael Vincent and Cameron Boyce,” he wrote. “Not to mention the 2007 snub of the great Aaron Spelling. Got an explanation for us @theacademyawards.oscars @theoscars2020.”

On Monday, February 10, the Academy released a statement about their decision process behind their in memoriam segment.

“The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars In Memoriam segment,” the statement read. “An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time. All the submissions are included on Oscar.com and will remain on the site throughout the year.  Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce are remembered in the Oscar.com gallery.”
