10 Things You Didn’t Know About Smallville

Over its ten season run, Smallville guided us through the awkward teenage years of a young Clark Kent as he discovered his powers, and battled several enemies on his journey to becoming Superman. The show garnered itself a wide and loyal audience and it has shockingly been 14 years since it aired in 2001 and 3 since it wrapped up in 2011, meaning it is a good time to look back and learn some things you never knew about the show, or at least look back and realize the now famous faces who got their start. As we anticipate the new stories of Superman in Batman v Superman and The Justice League, let’s first go back to where it all began– Smallville.

10. Jensen Ackles was the second choice to play Clark Kent if Tom Welling had not accepted the role. Although he didn’t get the part Ackles did appear in season 4 for 22 episodes as Lana’s love interest Jason Teague. Of course although he didn’t get his big break with Smallville, he went on to star in another hugely successful series, Supernatural.

9. By the end of its tenth season, Smallville had become the longest running science-fiction show in North America, passing Stargate SG-1. It was also the longest running comic-book based series in TV history. Smallville broke the record by only 5 episodes with 218 and, interestingly enough, Ackles’ show Supernatural is now on track to beat Smallville’s record after just wrapping season 10 and heading into its 11th season.

8. There was a season 11! For all the fans who thought season 10 was the last of Smallville, well you’re partially right. The television series ended in season 10 but season 11 was produced as a comic book. The comic book debuted on April 13, 2012 to very positive reviews from fans as it brought back all of their favorite Smallville characters and continued their storylines as well as adding new and exciting characters such as Wonfer Woman and Batman.

7. Tom Welling admits to not even being a fan of Superman comics (much like previous Superman, Christopher Reeve) and after taking the role he continued to avoid any Superman related material so that it would not influence his take on the character he is given in the script. In fact it took some convincing to get Welling to sign on in the first place. He reportedly turned the role down twice before finally reading over the script and then agreeing to sign on.

6. Both Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley made appearances on the show before becoming the stars of the CW’s Vampire Diaries in 2009. Wesley appeared in season 2 episode 15 “Prodigal” as Lionel Luthor’s illigitmate son Lucas Luthor while Somerhalder appeared in 6 episodes in season 3 as Adam Knight, yet another love interest of Lana Lang’s.

5. Of all the cast members, Tom Welling is the only one to appear in every single episode. Meanwhile, he and Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan) are the only two series regulars to appear in all 10 seasons of the show. Like many long running shows, some of the stars dropped out eventually including Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor.

4. This one you did know if you have seen the very first season of Smallville, but you might not have remembered that a then relatively unknown was the central villain of season 1 episode 7, “Craving.” Adams played an overweight teenager, Jodi Melville, who goes on a diet with plants grown in kryptonite filled soil, getting her the body she wants but with an uncontrollable hunger for human body fat. Now, of course, Adams is in the middle of the Superman universe after portraying Lois Lane in 2013’s Man of Steel and will reprise the role in Batman v Superman and The Justice League-Part 1.

3. Amy Adams isn’t the only one to appear in multiple Superman stories. Dean Cain, Teri Hatcher, Patrick Cassidy, Michael McClean, George Murdock, Richard Grant and Rob LaBelle have all appeared in both Smallville and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

2. Lex Luthor’s first scene and final scene are parallels of one another. In the “Pilot” episode Lex is first seen stepping out of a car at the LexCorp plant and turning to the camera. In his last scene in “Finale Part II” Lex turns to face the press cameras for his Presidential camera in the same manner as his first scene 10 seasons earlier.

1. The gorgeous mansion on the outskirts of Smallville inhabited by Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) is also in several Superhero films and shows. Not only is it a prominent location in Smallville, it is also the place used as Xavier’s mutant school is X2: X-Men United and is also the home of millionaire superhero Arrow/Oliver McQueen on the new hit series Arrow.
