Dancing with the Stars is one of those shows that pretty much demands that its dancing duos have amazing chemistry. When they don’t, viewers aren’t into it and end up voting them off, but when they do, fans go crazy. Over the course of DWTS’ 26 seasons, a lot of pairs have come and gone; however, there are some pairs who are forever etched in our memories because of the amazing chemistry they exhibited on the dance floor. Here are 12 DWTS pairs who had the best chemistry:

12. James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd

James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd had many people believing that something was going on between them off the dance floor – their chemistry looked that real! It turns out that the two were just friends who shared a lot of chemistry. “I’m psyched that I got her. We obviously get along and like each other as friends and as people, so we don’t have to fake that chemistry on the floor, which would just add another element of stress. It’s genuinely there, and I like that,” the Big Time Rush member told Parade.

11. Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold

This dancing duo won season 25 of Dancing with the Stars and with good reason – their performance technique was great and they shared a ton of chemistry. According to Arnold, the reason that they had so much success together on the dance floor was because of trust, hard work and a bit of silliness. “It’s good because we know how to go from play to work immediately,” she said. “I love that because that’s what’s going to keep us sane throughout this competition – that we can have normal conversations that aren’t just about the show, and be friends, and rely on each other and lean on each other because it’s a tough journey. It is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do, mentally and physically. So having someone to lean on who you can trust is super important.”

10. Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco and dancing pro Cheryl Burke had off-the-charts chemistry when they performed together on Dancing with the Stars. Their chemistry was so intense that it resulted in a fling once the competition was over. “I mean, we had a fling,” Burke told Ellen Degeneres. “We worked so much together and we had great chemistry, but it was the same pattern I had with my boyfriends in the past.”

9. Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke

Gilles Marini (best known for being Samantha’s naked neighbor in the first Sex and the City movie) and Cheryl Burke had some really convincing chemistry during season eight of Dancing with the Stars. Many viewers wondered whether or not there was more going on between them than what they saw on the show, but it turns out that their chemistry was just for the cameras. Marini was and still is happily married.

8. Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy

During season 19 of Dancing with the Stars, Janel Parrish (from Pretty Little Liars) and dancing pro Val Chmerkovskiy had an insane amount of chemistry. When Parrish broke up with her boyfriend, Payson Lewis, during filming, the rumor mill went into overdrive suggesting that the actress and her pro partner were becoming a pair off the dance floor as well. Although Val later admitted that they “entered into a romance” he also confirmed it was more of a showmance than anything else, and they parted ways after the show.

7. Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas

Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas competed during season five of Dancing with the Stars and during their time working together they got really close. These two had so much chemistry during their performances that once they were eliminated they decided to take their relationship out of the ballroom and into real life, but it didn’t work out and now they are just friends.

6. Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke

Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke’s chemistry in the ballroom was undeniable. Their freestyle to “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” contained the perfect balance of sex appeal and excitement and goes down in history as one of the best performances of all time. While there were some that believed that the two were engaged in a little more than dancing, lawyers for Lachey and Burke called the rumors “untrue and irresponsible.”

5. Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy

These two had some serious chemistry! Every week, it seemed to get a little more intense and even the judges took notice. “The truth is, we’ve been watching you as a couple grow. I don’t know if it’s a real couple. But it’s played into your dancing,” Carrie Ann Inaba said. Years later, Val confirmed that the crazy chemistry between them had to do with a mutual attraction. “I was young and single, she was amazing, and we had a natural attraction for each other. But I was never a person who kissed and told, and I was raised to keep personal lives private […] So the season might have been cringe-worthy at times, but at least I did get a lot of airtime, and the internet went crazy with Kelly and Val.”

According to the professional dancer, while there was obvious chemistry between her and the bull rider, there was never anything romantic because of their teacher-student dynamic.
