8 Things You Didn’t Know About Gisele Bundchen And Leonardo DiCaprio’s Relationship

Gisele Bundchen and Leonardo DiCaprio were one of Hollywood’s hottest couples back when they dated from 2000 to 2005. He was one of the biggest actors and she was the supermodel at the moment and together they looked absolutely perfect. Although these two remained notoriously tight lipped about their relationship, some things did get out, although most people have probably forgotten about them already. For those of you who love some old school gossip, here are 8 things you didn’t know about Hollywood’s former power couple, Leo and Gisele:

8. Meeting

Leo noticed Gisele during one of her runway shows. He reportedly sent her flowers in a bid to impress her, but it didn’t work. She was dating model Scott Barnhill at the time. As time went on, however, the relationship fizzled out and then Gisele met Leo through a mutual friend. Leo had been dating Paris Hilton at the time, but he cooled things with her to make himself available for the Brazilian model.

7. Paparazzi Target

The paparazzi would follow them everywhere, no matter how remote, which is why they tried to avoid going out in public together. They once went to the Andes in Peru and, when they reached the top of a mountain near the ruins of Machu Picchu, they reportedly found a battery of photographers waiting for them. “Because of the paparazzi, we try almost never to go out in public together,” Gisele told Vanity Fair in 2004.

6. For Love

During their relationship, Gisele moved to Los Angeles to be with Leo, but it didn’t end up working out too well for her. “I moved to L.A. for love. I was in a long-distance relationship and I wanted to be close to him. This was the first love of my life, so that was it: ‘I’m moving, I’m in love.’ But now it’s been four years and it’s been hard. I’ve had to cancel a lot of jobs,” she said. She eventually decided to move back to New York and left her two horses and three dogs behind in L.A. with Leo.

5. Rough Patch

They hit a rough patch a couple of years into their relationships. The tabloids were reporting that the couple broke up because DiCaprio had strayed. Gisele was so distraught that she took eight months off work and retreated back to Brazil. She describes it as the “downest time.” “Of course, I lost a lot of money, but all I wanted was to be with my mom and dad and my sisters,” she told Vanity Fair in 2004. “I think the hard way is the best way to learn, because it forces you to go deep inside yourself to figure things out, [and now] I am thankful for that time, because I learned so much. I had to grab myself from the bottom and say, ‘Get up.’ That’s when I learned everything is positive, nothing is negative. Everything is growing and learning. You have to live life. You can’t be scared.”

4. Breakup in 2002

They broke up in 2002. Sources close to Gisele claimed that she simply grew tired of him. “It’s just that Gisele was getting a bit bored and wanted to move on. It was always a rather on-off affair anyway, and neither of them are at the stage when they want to settle down for good,” a source said. The New York Post, however, claimed that this wasn’t the case and that the ubermodel was madly in love with Leo. “She’s dying to get back together with him. She thinks they’re meant to be together, but Leo’s more interested in hanging out with his posse right now, and she thinks he just needs to get that out of his system and then he’ll realize they’re soulmates after all.”

3. 2005 Academy Awards

For the 2005 Academy Awards, the Oscar-winning actor brought his girlfriend of five years. Leo was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role as Howard Hughes in The Aviator. This was the first and the last public appearance they would make as a couple. Gisele wore a white, billowy Christian Dior gown, which everyone talked about, and Leo wore a Prada suit. Even though, prior to this, there rumors that the couple’s relationship was on the rocks, this appearance helped to quell those rumors for a couple of weeks.

2. Final Breakup 2005

When they broke up for good in 2005, neither party ever gave a reason for the split. Instead, Gisele quickly moved on. First she dated surfer Kelly Slater and then, after that was over, she was spotted making out with Josh Hartnett, who had just broken up with Scarlett Johansson, before she finally found long-term love with Tom Brady in December 2006. They got married in 2009 and together they have two children, Benjamin and Vivian. Leo, on the other hand, began dating model Bar Rafaeli after the breakup and then moved on to Blake Lively, Erin Heatherton, Toni Garn and now Nina Agdal.

1. Still Friends

In 2009, the supermodel told Vanity Fair that she’s still friends with the Academy Award-winning actor. “Leo is a really wonderful person,” she said. “We still speak sometimes, and I’m friends with his mom. He still has one of my dogs. He’s done a lot for the environment, and I admire what he’s done. We know what we had; we were young, and we grew together in a lot of ways. We were just not meant to be boyfriend and girlfriend, but I respect him enormously, and I wish him nothing but the best.”
