Fame10 Fashion Evolution: Kristen Stewart

When it comes to fashion, Kristen Stewart doesn’t seem like the type to really care that much. She isn’t one of those girly girls who is really into clothes, makeup and hair – she would rather be comfortable. She’s been famous for a pretty long time now. We have, in a sense, watched her grow up. She went from being a complete tomboy to somewhat of a bombshell. We know that she will never be one of those women who lives for fashion, but it is still fun to see what she wears on the red carpet. Here is Stewart’s fashion evolution!

Premiere of Zathura – 2005

Kristen Stewart showed up at the premiere of “Zathura” dressed like a teenager, which is fair cause she was one at the time. She wore a pair of light blue jeans, a tank top, a blazer and a pair of converse sneakers. Her hair doesn’t look like it was styled (or washed) and she wore minimal makeup. It was clear from a young age that she wasn’t interested in being one of those actresses who goes all out on the red carpet.

The film that she was promoting, “Zathura,” a science fiction adventure film, received mostly positive reviews from critics even though its plot was really similar to that of “Jumanji.” It ended up flopping at the box office though, probably because it opened around the same time as “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t able to earn back its budget. Stewart’s performance didn’t garner much attention; however, one critic over at Slant magazine did mention that she had shed her tomboyishness from “Panic Room.”

Premiere of Into the Wild – 2007

The young actress stepped it up a notch at the premiere of “Into the Wild.” It looks like she was trying to look more sophisticated, so she borrowed one of her mother’s dresses. This beige dress is definitely more mature; however, it isn’t age appropriate. We will give her some credit where credit is due – she didn’t come dressed in jeans and a tank, so this is a bit of a step up.

The movie, “Into the Wild,” received critical acclaim; however, Kristen Stewart’s performance received mixed reviewer from critics. Salon.com praised her portrayal of the teenager singer Tracy, calling it a “sturdy, sensitive performance.” The Chicago Tribune was also impressed with her, noting that she did “vividly well with a sketch of a role.” Variety’s critic Dennis Harvey wasn’t as nice. “It’s unclear whether Stewart means to be playing hippie-chick Tracy as vapid, or whether it just comes off that way,” he wrote.

MTV Video Music Awards – 2008

Kristen Stewart looked like she was trying to dress her age at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. She wore this Derek Lam mini-dress with Sergio Rossi Marissa cut out pumps. While this is an improvement over the matronly dress that she wore to the “Into the Wild” premiere, we still aren’t crazy about this mini-dress. Also, what is going on with her hair? It looks like it hasn’t been washed or brushed.

At this point, Stewart was on her way to becoming a superstar. She landed the part of Bella in the “Twilight” franchise. The movies were based on Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling books of the same name. Like most of her other film roles, the critics gave her performance in “Twilight” mixed reviews. Some praised her for capturing “Bella’s detachment, as well as her need to bust through it;” other others called her acting “wooden” and her facial expressions “blank.”

MTV Movie Awards – 2009

The “Twilight” star showed a bit of her rebellious side at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. She rocked this red black taffeta Yigal Azrouël dress, which featured black embroidery, with a pair of black high top converse sneakers. We like the dress – it looks great on her. The shoes, however, are a bit of a problem. She really should have gone the extra mile with a pair of black heels but, you know Kristen Stewart, she doesn’t like to fit in. I guess we can respect that.

Her career was really taking off in 2009. She reprised her role of Bella in the “Twilight” sequel, “New Moon.” Again, critics gave her performance mixed reviews. While Jordan Mintzer from Variety called Stewart “the heart and soul of the film,” praising her for giving “both weight and depth to dialogue,” Manohla Dargis from The New York Times said Stewart’s “lonely-girl blues soon grow wearisome” and Billy Goodykoontz from The Arizona Republic called her “a huge disappointment.”

82nd Annual Academy Awards – 2010

Kristen Stewart went for a dark and moody look at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. She donned this silk navy blue Monique Lhuillier gown. It featured a sculpted bodice and a fitted asymmetrical draped trumpet skirt. While the gown was lovely, we think it would have looked even lovelier with some more jewelry. A necklace or some earrings would have given the gown the boost it needed.

Stewart was still committed to the “Twilight” series in 2010; however, she managed to branch out a bit. She portrayed rock star Joan Jett in the biographical film “The Runaways.” For once, the critics were in agreement – they all were in awe of her performance. The Metro Times wrote, “It turns out that Stewart is actually really good at capturing Jett’s icy, tough-but-cool girl swagger, adding the needed touches of vulnerability that transform it into a pretty terrific performance…Stewart is a genuine rock star here.”

MTV Movie Awards – 2011

The “New Moon” star got it right at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. She sported this red leather Balmain mini-dress from the Spring 2011 collection, which was covered in safety pins, studs and stars. This is one of the hottest dresses that we have seen her in. It looks edgy, which is totally her style.

In 2011, Kristen Stewart once again reprised her role as Bella. “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” received negative reviews; however, it ended up killing it at the box office, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing film of 2011 and the highest grossing film of the franchise. The critics were finally in agreement that Stewart did a great job portraying Bella. The only problem a few of them had was with the lack of chemistry on-screen between Stewart and Robert Pattinson. These two had an off-screen relationship as well, so maybe this was a sign that all was not well in paradise.

Premiere of Breaking Dawn Part 2 – 2012

Kristen Stewart tried to go for a more glamorous look at the premiere of “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” She rocked this nude corseted strapless Zuhair Murad Fall 2012 gown, which was pretty see through. It definitely needed another layer. It just doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

2012 was a great year professionally for Stewart; however, on a personal level, it was anything but. She was still dating Robert Pattinson at this point, but she was caught having an affair with the married director from her film “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Robert Pattinson broke up with her; however, they got back together a short while later. Rupert Sanders wasn’t so lucky. His wife at the time, Liberty Ross, ended up filing for divorce six months after the affair went public. While Stewart and Pattinson were able to make their relationship work while they were promoting “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” they quietly broke up the following spring.

Nickelodeon’s 26th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards – 2013

The “Snow White and the Huntsman” star attended the Nickelodeon’s 26th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards in a dark blue printed shorts set by Osman with black patent Christian Louboutin ‘Pigalle Plato’ pumps. This is definitely one of her better outfits. It is young and playful, which is something that she doesn’t usually go for. Also, we like her fishtail braid – it is super cute.

After her affair with Rupert Sanders became public, Kristen Stewart put on a brave face finished up the promotions of “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” and then fell off the radar. For most of 2013, she barely appeared in public. She was supposed to star in the movie “Focus,” alongside Ben Affleck, but she dropped out of it to reportedly focus on her flailing relationship with Robert Pattinson. That didn’t end up working out either. Sometime in the spring, these two broke up; however, neither one of them actually confirmed anything to the press.

Premiere of Clouds of Sils Maria – 2014

A brand new Kristen Stewart appeared in 2014. At the premiere of “Clouds of Sils Maria,” she debuted an asymmetrical crop hairstyle and a mature new sense of style. She was wearing this black and silver-embroidered Chanel dress with Christian Louboutin ‘Iriza’ glitter pumps. While we still love how she looks in a mini-dress, this style looks way better on her. It is edgy, but sophisticated.

After her brief career hiatus, Stewart was back. She appeared in “Clouds of Sils Maria,” alongside Juliette Binoche and Chloë Grace Moretz. Her performance in the film earned her critical acclaim. Peter Debruge of Variety wrote, “Stewart is the one who actually embodies what Binoche’s character most fears, countering the older actress’ more studied technique with the same spontaneous, agitated energy that makes her the most compellingly watchable American actress of her generation.” Her other big performance of 2014 was in “Still Alice,” alongside Julianne Moore. Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter observed that the film brought out an “unexpected depth in Stewart.”
