Fame10 Fashion Evolution: Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley has a lot going for her. She’s obviously talented, quite pretty and, when it comes to new age health tips, she’s got everyone beat. There is one thing she struggles with though and that’s fashion. She just doesn’t seem get it and we don’t think she cares. She’d rather be trying to figure out new ways to live off the land. We really wish she’d put slightly more effort into her red carpet appearances – she has a lot of potential and it seems a bit wasted. Part of playing the game means looking part. Join us as we take a look at Woodley’s fashion evolution!

American Music Awards – 2008

Shailene Woodley attended the 2008 American Music Awards wearing this gray pleated Christian Siriano Spring 2009 dress with heels that featured chiffon ruffled details. We’re not sure how to feel about the dress. It’s nice enough, we guess, but it just doesn’t seem to suit her or fit her that well. There are so many problems with this outfit. The dress looks a bit long and it doesn’t appear to be tailored to her body. The shoes are another problem. The chiffon details are a little too much.

In 2008, Woodley’s career was still in its infancy. She had guest starred on a number of different television shows, including “The District,” “Crossing Jordan,” “The O.C.” and “Jack and Bobby.” Her big TV break came when she landed the role of Amy Juergens on “The Secret Life of an American Teenager.” While the show initially received mixed reviews from critics, it was well received among female and teenage viewers.

Teen Choice Awards – 2009

Who knew that the “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” star had such a rocking bod! She showed up at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards wearing this printed top and high waisted shorts with a color-coordinated belt. We personally can’t believe the pins on this one – she could easily have been a model. Unfortunately, she is still having major problems with her style. We like the shorts – from what we can see. However, the blouse is awful and the belt looks even worse. She has so much potential, but it seems wasted.

Here’s a little fun fact about Shailene Woodley: Before Willa Holland took over the role of Kaitlin Cooper, Marissa Cooper’s younger sister (played by Mischa Barton) on “The O.C.,” Woodley had the part. We think they made the right choice, going with Holland though. It is hard to imagine Woodley being so manipulative and so capable of plotting against the ones she loves.

Teen Choice Awards – 2010

It looks as though Shailene Woodley was trying to dress her age at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. She donned this short black mini-dress, which really showed off her long, lean legs. The only problems we see with this outfit are with the sleeves and the heels. However, in spite of these obvious flaws, we think this ensemble is a step in the right direction. The big question now is can she keep it up? We’re guessing that she can’t, but that remains to be seen.

At this point, “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” was still going strong. Although it didn’t initially receive good reviews from critics, developments in season two were well received. It also didn’t hurt that the show continued to bring in a lot of viewers, thus cementing Woodley’s popularity amongst teens and adults. We don’t think that she was quite satisfied with television though.

The BFI London Film Festival: The Descendants Premiere – 2011

The young American actress attended the premiere of “The Descendants” at the BFI London Film Festival wearing a strapless Christian Dior Fall 2011 mini-dress, which featured an embroidered bodice and a ruffled tulle skirt. She accessorized with Christian Dior Fall 2011 runway heels. We think the dress looks nice; however, we’re not sure it is well suited with the heels. Putting something a little less ornate on her feet would have probably looked better.

In “The Descendants,” Shailene Woodley played George Clooney’s character’s troubled daughter Alex. Her performance received positive reviews from critics. A.O. Scott from The New York Times wrote that “Ms. Woodley..[gives]..one of the toughest, smartest, most credible adolescent performances in recent memory.” In addition, she also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture and took home the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. Nylon Magazine also featured the up and coming star in their “Young Hollywood Issue.”

23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala – 2012

Shailene Woodley showed up at the 23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala wearing this polka dotted shirt with a matching mini-skirt from the Spring/Summer 2012 collection by Stella McCartney. We personally don’t think that this is one of her better red carpet outfits. The person styling her should know better than to pair that shirt with that skirt. It is definitely one of those ensembles that is better in theory than in practice. Luckily she has those amazing legs to distract people from what she’s wearing.

While Woodley was still struggling to find her sense of style, she was having no problems with her career. She starred in the film adaptation of Tim Tharp’s novel “The Spectacular Now.” Her performance, again, received praise from critics and she received a nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards. She also starred in the independent film “White Bird in a Blizzard” about a troubled young woman whose life is upended when her mother mysteriously disappears.

MTV Movie Awards – 2014

The Golden Globe-nominated actress wore this army-green Balmain Pre-Fall 2014 outfit, which featured a cropped-leather top and matching leather-pleated skirt. We think that this is probably one of her better outfits, but it still isn’t great. For some reason, it just doesn’t feel like she really has a solid sense of what her style is.

Shailene Woodley’s stylist Ilaria Urbinati begs to differ though. “She’s just a lovely human; she has a real sense of who she is and that comes out in her style. She doesn’t do too much jewellery or make-up, she likes to keep it super unfussy – which is fine by me because I don’t like to over style, especially on someone so young. Divergent was my first press tour with her, so it was fun to see her really go for it. And I love that she really doesn’t seem too concerned with what other people think. If she likes it, she’s gonna wear it. That’s pretty refreshing for an actress,” Urbinati told The Debrief.

Teen Choice Awards – 2014

Shailene Woodley tried a very different look at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards. She rocked this long-sleeved Peter Pilotto Fall 2014 dress, which featured diagonal stripes, a feathery print on the bodice, a contrast skirt and two-toned sleeves. She completed the look with red suede Kurt Geiger pumps and slicked back hair. While the dress is definitely interesting to look at, we’re not sold. Also, we’re not into the hair.

Around this time, there was a rumor going around about Woodley’s bad hygiene. Word on the street is that stylists and designers were offended because she doesn’t wear traditional deodorants and instead uses essential oils. “Shailene rubs these essential oils all over her body, and they aren’t very welcoming scents,” a tipster said. “Her smell is totally offensive, and it’s gotten so bad that her stylist is having a hard time borrowing designer outfits for her to wear because she makes the gowns stink!”

U.S. premiere of Insurgent – 2015

The “Divergent” star went for a super sexy look at the U.S. premiere of “Insurgent.” She wore this black Ralph Lauren dress, which featured a plunging halter neckline and a sharply tailored silhouette. While the dress is nice, we’re not sure that we’re into it. This could be because she hasn’t really accessorized and she didn’t even bother to have her hair done. We get that she isn’t into all the trappings of fame, but she could at least try to play the red carpet game.

Shailene Woodley has become known for the odd things she says during interviews. She has openly said that she doesn’t consider herself a feminist and that she doesn’t believe in monogamy. Most recently, she told an interviewer how she believed that insects were the food of the future. “I’ve eaten ants and that was great. And June bugs, that was great. I think the future of food is in insects, so we’ll see what happens. If I could. I would grow a pair of wings and fly,” she told Nylon Magazine.
